What Is a Freight Container? Types and Applications

A clear guide to freight container types and applications, from dry and refrigerated units to tanks and flat racks.

What Is a Freight Container? Types and Applications

A freight container is a modular unit manufactured to standard dimensions whose durable steel body makes it suitable for storage, industrial use and custom projects. ISO dimensional and equipment standards ensure that products are compatible, reusable and technically comparable.

Why are containers standardised?

Standardisation is one of the main advantages of containers. Length, width, height, door opening and corner fittings follow defined norms, allowing dimensions, capacities and use options to be compared technically.

Main freight-container types

Dry freight container

This is the most common type, used for packaged, boxed and palletised dry cargo. It has a sealed steel body and water-resistant floor. For details, see our 20 ft Dry container and 40 ft Dry container pages.

High Cube container

It is approximately 30 cm taller than a standard unit, providing more internal volume for bulky cargo. 40 ft HC container is the most popular example of this type.

Refrigerated (Reefer) container

Designed for food, pharmaceuticals and cold-chain products requiring temperature control. An integrated refrigeration unit maintains a stable internal temperature. Learn more: 20′ Reefer.

Tank container (ISO Tank)

Stainless-steel equipment for transporting liquids, gases and powders in bulk. Product: 20 ft Tank container.

Flat rack, platform, open top and open side

These open designs suit heavy, long or oversized cargo that does not fit inside a standard container. Flat rack, platform and open top are included in this group.

Where are containers used?

  • Industrial storage: equipment, material and stock areas
  • Storage: secure storage on sites and construction areas
  • Modification: offices, workshops, shops, cafés and living spaces
  • Industrial applications: shipyard, site and energy projects
